What is a Family Group? That was my first reaction when Nintendo announced that its Switch Online service’s Expansion Pack would cost $50 a year. On top of all this, the games also suffer from countless glitches. I experienced odd musical effects in Super Mario 64, with music tracks changing partway through levels. Judging by other reports, the issues don’t stop there either. With issues saving games, framerate drops, and other technical glitches, the Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack is not off to a great start. Very little about any of this makes sense. A robust online service like PSN or Xbox Live charging $50-60 a year at this point is standard practice. But Nintendo’s online capabilities have already been lacking, and instead of bolstering the service with new features, they are simply throwing a bunch of game bundles and a random expansion for a singular game players may not even own into this 2.5x higher price point. It’s bizarre, and it’s no wonder it was getting raked over the coals on social media yesterday after the show.
